 1) Provinzhauptstadt an der Ostküste der gleichnamigen Insel, wirtschaftliches, kulturelles und religiöses Zentrum der Visayan Islands, Philippinen, 662 000 Einwohner (als Metro Cebu mit den angrenzenden Städten Mandaue und Lapu-Lapu etwa 800 000 Einwohner; starke chinesische Minorität). Nach Manila ist Cebu die bedeutendste Stadt des Landes, wichtigster Hafen für den Binnenverkehr und Luftverkehrsknotenpunkt (internationaler Flughafen auf der Insel Mactan), sechs Universitäten (darunter San Carlos, gegründet 1595, die älteste des Landes); katholischer Erzbischofssitz; Erdölraffinerie.
 
 
Häuser mit vorgebauten Balkonen auf mächtigen Holzsäulen; spanische Befestigungsanlage (heute Schule und Verwaltungsgebäude).
 
 
Cebu wurde 1565 als erste spanische Siedlung auf den Philippinen gegründet.

Einwohner; schroffer Gegensatz zwischen dicht besiedeltem Küstentiefland und entwaldetem, zum Teil verkarstetem Bergland (Höhen bis zu 1 000 m über dem Meeresspiegel); Zentrum des Maisanbaus (zum Teil drei Ernten im Jahr), ferner Kokospalmen-, Bananen- und Zuckerrohrpflanzungen sowie Gemüsebau; bei Toledo die größte Kupfermine der Philippinen.
